Pierre Ambrogiani, born into a modest family, grew up in the old working-class district of Marseille. From 1928 to 1950, he worked as a mail carrier and then as a postman. In 1936, with the help of André Malraux and Louis Aragon, he helped establish the first provincial cultural centre with fellow Marseille painters Antoine Serra, Louis Toncini, and François Diana.
A well-known and colourful figure in Marseille, Ambrogiani was friends with Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono. His studio was near the Old Port, where he painted landscapes and still lifes. In 1943, he moved to a workshop on Quai Rive-Neuve. He received guidance from René Seyssaud in 1944.
Renowned for his bright palette, Ambrogiani also created engravings and illustrations. In 1962, he decorated the Immaculée-Conception church in Marseille with frescoes and stained glass windows. He designed a postage stamp for Saint-Paul-de-Vence in 1961.
Due to illness, he stopped painting in 1973 and passed away in 1985.
