Hellman first trained as an engineer and worked for many years at ASEA in Västerås. At the same time, he devoted himself to painting as an amateur and conducted self-study during many long trips, including to America. He abandoned his permanent employment, and after some time in Paris, he began studying art at Otte Sköld's painting school in Stockholm in 1940 and with Othon Friesz in Paris in 1846-1947 and during study trips to Holland, Belgium and Italy. After a studio exhibition in Västerås in 1943, he held his first major solo exhibition at the Eskilstuna Art Museum1943 and subsequently exhibited in several places in Sweden and Europe. He participated in exhibitions with Sweden's general art association . He was awarded Västerås city's cultural scholarship in 1951 and the Prix de Maroc studio scholarship in 1951 and 1952. His art consists of portraits , genre pictures, urban motifs and landscapes , often with figures from Öland or France. Hellman is represented at the Västerås Art Museum and Gustav VI Adolf's collection.
