Artist Biography -

Josep Guinovart i Bertran (1927-2007) was a Spanish painter from Barcelona, celebrated for his abstract expressionist style. Beginning as a decorator in 1941, he studied at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios de la Llotja until 1946, first exhibiting in 1948. His early engravings in 1951 paid homage to Federico García Lorca. After a transformative study period in Paris through a French Institute grant in 1953, where he encountered Cubism, Guinovart shifted towards abstract art, incorporating unconventional materials and large-scale designs. He earned multiple accolades, including Spain’s National Award for Plastic Arts in 1982. Guinovart also founded The Artists' Vineyard in La Pobla de Cérvoles, blending sculpture with viticulture. He passed away in 2007, shortly after a heart attack.
